Canberra

Canberra is well known for its national icons and politicians rather than its lifestyle and cultural aspects but there is more soul to this city than meets the eye – you just need to know where to look. Home to a group of locals who have made it their life’s work to perfect their passions of art, food and wine, take the time to explore and you will be rewarded by your discovery.

Ginninderry Homestead

Joe and Sue Sciberras created Ginninderry Homestead a purposebuilt bed and breakfast offering an exclusive rural retreat almost as a hobby for their retirement.

Little did they know it would prove to be such a success. Today Sue and daughter Amelia run the Homestead B&B, host weddings and events and are currently building a day spa and purposebuilt conference centre (opening early 2009).

Amelia says it's the 'people factor' that drives her. She delights in seeing people enjoying their stay at Ginninderry The generous rooms are peppered with antique furniture and finely finished with fresh country-cosy linen and guests often comment on the views across to the ranges.

B&B guests can unwind in the formal lounge or on the expansive verandah and enjoy the stunning landscaped gardens. And just for exclusive access group guests, you can have run of the homestead complete with your own private billiard table, piano (for those that can play) and a lovely sundrenched courtyard with spa and BBQ.

When staying overnight, popular Canberra restaurants Bella Vista (Italian comfort food) and Rock Salt (fine dining) are only ten minutes away.

Ginninderry is not simply accommodation but an exercise in serenity. Explore the property with the official Ginninderry garden guide where the gardens' secrets are revealed, then don the whites for a spot of tennis in the sunshine on their tennis court.

And be sure to meet the Belted Galloway cattle, hairy goats, inquisitive chooks and ducks, and the family's four dogs, all with eccentric personalities of their own.

At day's end, imbibe a spot of old port wine before the open fire or in summer enjoy a cool beverage via the French doors that lead onto the curling veranda with its mediative views.
